Gasland II once again takes up the mantel of communities suffering from fracking. Spectacular “magic tricks” abound as residents set alight to water from their taps and hose pipes to create breathtaking fire displays. Children wake up with nosebleeds. Families are forced to move. An indifferent EPA in denial watches on; refusing to acknowledge the problem and refusing to provide clean, alternative water to parched families. Slowly these once prosperous villages decay until nothing is left but shells of ghostly grandeur amongst a pockmarked landscape.
Far from “tree-hugging” hippies dedicated all things eco, many of the effected communities tend to be stiffly Republican, animal-hunting, gun-toting conservatives who have found themselves the victims of resource and land exploitation from unethical corporations. For once the victims aren’t necessarily poor and uneducated, but they include millionaires and mayors. Contaminated water, it turns out, is blind to class and cultural differences.
